The Grand Tour Moves on to Venezia
Sold from The Grand Tour exhibition is a beautiful pastel entitled, Sunset, Venice from artist C,H. Pellettier.
Charles Pellettier was born in Britian of French descent and lived most of his life after the second World War living and working in Europe, where he became a full-time artist. His work initially focused on the French seaside specifically in the region of Etretat. He also travelled frequently to Istanbul where the vibrant city streets inspired a great number of artworks. It is his images of Venice that he is particularly well known for.
The vibrant colour palette and fluid marks are typical of Pelletier’s impressionistic style. His gradation of colour adds depth to the composition and draws the eye to the tranquil clear skies visible to the background. We can see a lone gondola driver steering his Venetian rowing boat towards the vivid city streets. Pellettier exhibited widely during his lifetime, particularly in Paris, where he was well-known and represented in a major dealer gallery as well as attending various and markets around France. A dealer gallery in Venice also exhibited his work of Venetian scenes, that allowed him to afford more time in that most picturesque of cities.
