The Grand Tour sets sail
Sold from The Grand Tour exhibition to a Dunedin collector, a blustery painting entitled , A Fresh Northerly by artist James Webb. He was born in London in 1825 into an artistic family. James’ father was Archibald Webb (1792-1883), marine and coastal painter. Webb exhibited at the Royal Academy, Society of British Artists and elsewhere from 1846 to 1866. Inspired by the romantic styles of Constable and Turner, he used pale colours to bring a soft atmosphere to his marine landscapes. Galleries worldwide, such as the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., National Maritime Museum, The Tate, and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne display his art. James Webb’s maritime paintings were exhibited widely in the UK up until 1888. Works by him are in the collections of Tate Museum, The Victoria and Albert Museum and almost all the provincial galleries.
